What Are Microplastics and How to Avoid Them

What are microplastics and how to avoid them has become one of the most searched questions in environmental health. These particles are now found in the air, water, food, and even the human body itself. While science is still working out the full picture of long-term harm, current research is clear enough to make smart, evidence-based changes at home.

What Microplastics Are and Where They Come From

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic smaller than five millimeters. They form when larger plastic objects, like bottles, bags, and food packaging, break down through exposure to sunlight, heat, and physical friction. Some are manufactured at that small size intentionally, like the microbeads once found in face washes and toothpastes. Others form gradually as everyday plastic products degrade over time.

These particles end up in waterways through runoff and reach the ocean through rivers and groundwater. Once in the marine environment, they enter the food chain at every level, from plankton up through larger fish, and eventually back to people through seafood. Research published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that chemicals added to plastics contaminate oceans at scale, with documented associations to conditions including obesity, cardiovascular disease, miscarriage, and cancer.

The scale of plastic production over the past 50 years means microplastics are now detected nearly everywhere researchers look, including in soil, fresh water, and remote wilderness areas far from any direct industrial source.

How Microplastics Enter The Human Body

Microplastics reach the body through more routes than most people expect. Eating and drinking are the most direct, but breathing indoor air and touching surfaces are also significant exposure pathways.

Where Microplastics Show Up In The Body

A scoping review published in the Journal of Global Health found microplastics in eight out of twelve human organ systems examined, including the cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, reproductive, and urinary systems. The particles were also detected in breast milk, semen, urine, and stool. That breadth of detection tells researchers that microplastics are reaching tissues beyond the digestive system, likely through the bloodstream.

The Three Main Entry Routes

Eating is one key entry point. Plastic food containers, cutting boards, and packaging all shed particles into food during storage, preparation, and heating. Drinking is another. Bottled water contains significantly more microplastic particles than tap water, with one widely cited study finding around 240,000 particles per liter in plastic bottles. Indoor air is a third route, since synthetic carpets, upholstered furniture, and plastic surfaces shed particles into household dust that people inhale throughout the day.

What Are Microplastics and How to Avoid Them In the Kitchen

The kitchen is where most people have the most control over their daily microplastic exposure. Several common kitchen habits significantly increase how many particles end up in food, and each one has a straightforward alternative.

Plastic Kitchenware During Food Prep

According to the NRDC's science-backed consumer guide, plastic cutting boards, blenders, electric kettles, and plastic bowls all introduce microplastics into food during normal use. In contrast, food prepared on bamboo boards or mixed in glass containers showed no detectable microplastics in the same research. Swapping common plastic kitchenware for glass, stainless steel, ceramic, or bamboo alternatives reduces exposure at the point where food is actually prepared.

Heat Makes It Worse

Heating is the most significant risk factor in the kitchen. Research shows that microwaving food in plastic packaging or containers can release millions of microplastic particles and billions of nanoplastics into the food itself. The NRDC guide recommends transferring food into glass or ceramic before microwaving, every time, not just occasionally.

Nonstick Cookware And PFAS Risk

Nonstick cookware coated with PTFE (often called Teflon) is another concern. Studies cited in the NRDC guide found that these pans release microplastics and nanoplastics during cooking, and the particles released happen to also be PFAS, the class of compounds commonly called forever chemicals. Stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic cookware do not carry this risk.

Replacing plastic cooking tools does not have to happen all at once. Swapping the tools you reach for most often is a practical starting point. A food-grade silicone spatula and silicone spoon cover most stirring, mixing, and serving tasks without shedding plastic particles into food. For stovetop cooking, a silicone flip replaces the plastic turners that sit directly in hot pans. Food-grade silicone does not release microplastics the way standard plastic utensils do, making each swap a direct reduction in daily exposure.

What To Do Beyond the Kitchen

Reducing exposure is not only a kitchen problem. Several other daily habits contribute meaningfully to how much plastic enters the body.

A UC Davis Health clinical breakdown from exposure scientist Dr. Deborah Bennett outlines a practical set of changes people can start with:

  • Switch from plastic to glass or stainless steel water bottles. Bottled water contains far more microplastics than filtered tap water.

  • Wash synthetic clothing in cold water. Hot water breaks synthetic fibers into microfibers, which are a form of microplastic. Air drying instead of machine drying reduces this further.

  • Choose natural fiber clothing and bedding. Cotton, linen, wool, and silk shed far fewer particles than polyester, nylon, or acrylic fabrics.

  • Limit processed and fast food. Plastic packaging used for processed foods is a significant chemical and microplastic exposure source.

  • Avoid heavily fragranced products. Plasticizers like phthalates are often part of the fragrance compound in personal care and cleaning products.

  • Manage indoor dust. Regular wiping of surfaces and using a HEPA air filter in sleeping areas reduces inhalation of plastic particles shed from synthetic carpets and furnishings.

Understanding The Risk And Acting Without Panic

Researchers are still learning exactly how much harm microplastics cause at the concentrations most people currently carry. What is clear is that the particles are widespread in the body, that some associated chemicals are known health risks, and that exposure levels can be meaningfully reduced through everyday choices. None of these changes require eliminating plastic entirely, which is not realistic for most households.

The most effective changes target the highest-exposure moments: heating food in plastic, drinking from plastic bottles, and using plastic tools that shed particles directly into food. Making those swaps first produces the most impact with the least disruption to daily routines.
